If you have been playing around with RC helicopters for some amount of time and thinking of getting into more serious hardware for RC helicopters, it is time that you looked into Turbine RC helicopters. Turbine RC helicopters give you the closest thrill that one can get to a real helicopter.
External construction of the Turbine powered Helicopters is the same as the nitro or electric powered ones. In fact kits are now available to convert your existing RC helicopter to a turbine powered one. The turbine powered helicopters can generate huge amounts of power and thrust as the fuel mixed with compressed air is ignited and tremendous power is generated due to this.
There are other differences in the engine construction. Computer controlled engine control unit, fuel pumps, gear box and air trap consumes a lot of electricity and hence requires a higher electrical power output.
The fuel consumption is higher and the heli can consume over 100ml/minute of flying time. Fuel is generally kerosene or jet fuel and this can be an expensive proposition, however the costs are still lesser than nitro powered RC helicopter.
Turbine RC helicopters are expensive toys and are not for the person with a tight budget. These helicopters can cost about 5-15000 USD and hence if you are considering buying one, make sure that you have sufficient skills to operate one. Better to start learning to control smaller RC helicopters before contemplating a turbine powered helicopter. However if you are a matured RC helicopter hobbyist, this is perfect for you.
